Please let me know which page in mod to edit to make my own layout by using the existing functionality
U need to create your own 'layouts'.
Ex., into folder 'views\default\page\layouts\' create your own file 'content_alt.php' with your code.
Then replace 'elgg_view_layout' in the editing files.
Ex., replace
By default
$body = elgg_view_layout('content', $params);
With your hack
$body = elgg_view_layout('content_alt', $params);
